Nature photography
Nature photography is very popular with both photographers
and photo buyers. Many computer screensavers and wall calendars
are based on nature photography.
I've always had a love of the outdoors and
nature. I did a lot of camping and backpacking when I was an
Eagle Scout. I love the ocean too and enjoy scuba diving,
surfing and boating. This gives me many opportunities to take
photos.

One rule to remember about nature photography is to always
have your camera ready. When you see a beautiful wild animal
you must be quick because it will not pause and pose for you.
Professional nature photographers will spend hours and even
days waiting in the wild for that special photo.

I knew I was cut out to enjoy nature photography when, as a
teenager, my father took me hunting. A large elk walked right
in front of me and as we looked at each other, I just couldn't
bring myself to fire the rifle at it. I wished I had brought a
camera so I could shoot a picture instead. The other hunters
teased me about being in shock at seeing such a big elk. The
fact was, it was such a beautiful and magnificent animal that I
simply did not want to harm a hair on its head. I didn't need
the food, my refrigerator was full. So I endured some jokes but
I made a friend. He looked me right in the eye as he sauntered
past, his breath making steam in the cold air. I like to think
he is still out there in the woods, laying low. Maybe he is
still smiling about our encounter that day... like I am.

I just wish I had a photo of that moment. Now I try my best
to carry a camera of some kind at all times. Even if it is just
a little pocket-size camera.
Enjoy your adventures in nature photography.
